Next issue: 09 April 2019 Honey Bees in Malaysia

Next issue: 09 April 2019 Honey Bees in Malaysia

A poster was displayed at the Fournation Stamp Exhibition 2019 with the theme Honey Bees in Malaysia. The official notification came out today from Pos Malaysia and it will be released on 09 April 2019.

The poster featured the stamps in a Honey Comb design (hexagonal) with the Miniature Sheet featured in an awesome die cut of a honey bee. I am sure the “unusual” stamp and MS collectors will be very pleased with the design of this issue.

The poster gave information on the stamp issue as follows:

  1. 60 sen stamp : Giant Honey Bee (Apis dorsata)
  2. 60 sen stamp: Eastern Honey Bee (Apis cerana)
  3. 60 sen stamp: Black Dwarf Honey Bee (Apis andreniformis)
  4. RM 4.00 Miniature Sheet: Stingless Honey Bee (Heterotrigona itama)
  5. 50 sen empty envelope featuring the Stingless Honey Bee Hive
  6. RM 6.00 empty folder

This is indeed a very attractive design. Here is the price list.

Zootopia

Zootopia

Yesterday saw a moderate crowd in the early morning when the Kuala Lumpur Philatelic Bureau opened. The sale was brisk and the “empty” folders were quickly sold out with only the “full” folders left. The nice surprise is that the “full” folder set’s FDCs have the special “Zoo Negara” cancellation! Not many realised this!.

?

Then it was off to concordancy adventure again! First to go back to uni:

?

If you have read the original posting on 12 August 2016, you would have guess where this post office is located :-).

Then it was a drive to the zoo!

Here is the stamp launch programme:

Print

Pos Malaysia set up a booth outside the entrance turnstiles at the Wall of Fame.

?

This is much kinder than the previous launch of Panda Postcards whereby the booth was set up inside the zoo! By setting up outside the zoo, this time there were more collectors, dealers and casual visitors buying the products. Great work, I hope Pos Malaysia continue to keep this point in mind on affordable accessibility. Parked near the Pos Malaysia booth was a VVIP vehicle. Have a guess at the VVIP:

?

Philatelic Society of Malaysia’s President, Dato’ Anuar Bashah was also on hand at the booth after the launch ceremony was over. He kindly arranged to have Zoo Negara address cancellation available at the Zoo Negara reception desk. This is an added bonus. This time, the cancellation is a new and neater version. The staff at the desk was also very helpful to the collectors who went there.

The booth remained open to late afternoon. It was supposed to be until 03:00 pm but reports came in that the staff did an outstanding job of waiting for some far away collectors to arrive before closing up! The lady doing the postmarking was very steady. She did a perfect job of cancelling all the covers, folders, posters, postcards and all sorts of philatelic items. Overall, the Pos Malaysia booth did a great job.

Here is a set of the official FDCs.

20160823 & Wonders of Malaysia Flora and Fauna set

There were many other creative private designs to accommodate the sheetlet. Perhaps Pos Malaysia can bring back the taller envelopes to accommodate special sheetlets. Collectors in Malaysia tend to like to create covers and this will help them put the sheetlet on cover. I made some sheetlets on plain envelope FDCs and will print a design on the plain area.

The stamp designer, Mr. KY Lim, was spotted arriving at about 2:00 pm to buy the products. He was gracious in agreeing to autograph the items on sale. An impromptu autograph session was set up at the cafeteria near the booth. Mr. Lim had earlier done an autograph session in the Philatelic Bureau. However, most of those at Zoo Negara missed the session as they left the Philatelic Bureau earlier. Here is the impromptu signing session:

Overall, the design is attractive and the event in Zoo Negara with the special cancellation is an added bonus. Perhaps Pos Malaysia can announce the special cancellations and the “name” on the cancellations earlier. More collectors could have made arrangements to come to the zoo for the cancellation.

Get ready for Pandaemonium 2

Get ready for Pandaemonium 2

It seems the Panda fever is already gripping the stamp collecting circle here. The “Made in Malaysia”, baby Panda (Nuan Nuan) will have the birthday bash in the National Zoo (Zoo Negara) tomorrow (22 August 2016) including a launch event of the 7 Wonders of Malaysia’s Flora and Fauna series.

An additional personalised stamp (locally called Setemku) will also be issued and made available in the Philatelic Bureau, General Post Office (Kuala Lumpur) and Zoo Negara. The Setemku will be sold at RM 21.20 (including GST).

Here is the visual:

Media Preview of the 7 Wonders of Malaysia’s Flora and Fauna

Media Preview of the 7 Wonders of Malaysia’s Flora and Fauna

In today’s 10:00 am media preview, Pos Malaysia showcased the upcoming 7 Wonders of Malaysia’s Flora and Fauna.

Media Preview

This set of products is confirmed to be launched in Dataran Dato’ Ismail Hutson in Zoo Negara, the same place where the special Panda postcards were launched.

Of particular interests are the Miniature Sheets and set of 7 postcards.

Here are the preview miniature sheets:

& Wonders Panda Perf and Imperf

This is the set of 7 postcards packed into a sleeve.

7 Wonders PostcardsThe empty folder is much smaller this time to accommodate the smaller sheetlet of stamps.

7 Wonder Empty Folder

Right, how do we line up the stamps on the envelope??? This is the sample.

The sheetlet will not fit into the envelope. Thus for those who collect sheetlet of cover, you are advised to prepare your own envelope. The rough size of the sheetlet is 180 mm (length) x 130 mm (height). Please allow a few more mm to cater for any variance.

Updated with image of the poster: 23 August 2016 Seven Wonders of Malaysia’s Flora and Fauna

The next issue is planned to be released on 23 August 2016. This issue will comprise of (prices before GST):

  1. Sheetlet at the price of RM 4
  2. Miniature Sheet of RM 2 x 2 (perforated and imperforated)
  3. Empty folder RM 6
  4. Postcard set RM 7

As usual the images have not been released but this should be soon.

Updated 16 August 2016:

Here is the image of the poster.

This set will comprise of the following flora and fauna:

Sheetlet:

  1. Lesser Mouse-deer: Kancil (Tragulus kanchil)
  2. Stingless Bee: Lebah Kelulut (Meliponula ferruginea)
  3. Wild Betel: Kaduk (Piper sarmentosum)
  4. Malayan Peacock-pheasant: Merak Pongsu (Polyplectron malacense)
  5. Common Green Frog: Katak Sawah Hijau (Rana erythraea)
  6. Asiatic Softshell Turtle: Labi-labi (Amyda cartilaginea)
  7. Mahseer: Kelah (Tor tambroides)

The sheetlet is too big for the official envelope and the stamps need to be removed. The sheetlet is a peel and stick (sticker type) stamp. Thus if you want to fit in the sheetlet, you might need to bring your own larger envelope.

Miniature Sheet (perforated and imperforated) will feature Giant Panda: Panda Gergasi (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) featuring baby Nuan Nuan and the parents on the side (Xing Xing and Liang Liang).

Notice the use of the QR code on each stamp? Scan the stamp (or even the poster) and you will be directed to additional online information. This is definitely a first in Malaysian philatelic history.

UM CRYSTAL QR information site

The QR code bring you to the Universiti Malaya’s Centre of Research for Computational Sciences and Informatics in Biology, Bioindustry, Environment, Agriculture and Healthcare (CRYSTAL). This explains the UM logo on the miniature sheet and the CRYSTAL logo on the poster.

This issue coincides with the Zoo Negara Giant Panda Nuan Nuan’s birthday celebration on the same day. There will be a launching of the stamps in Zoo Negara.

Zoo Negara Giant Panda Celebration

The best locations will be Universiti Malaya and Taman Melawati.
