A Tour of Melaka

A Tour of Melaka

The day started really slow. When the counters were opened, it was only a handful of regulars.

I decided to skip the MATTA Fair in PWTC as there was no longer any philatelic event. The designer informed me that the Sarawak Tourism Bureau made their own folder designs for patrons of the Sarawak Tourism Booths. Did anyone manage to check them out?

Here is Mr KY Lim autographing the stamp products.

So it was a tour of Melaka for me!

The drive was smooth and scorching hot. The first stop was the General Post Office. Lim Stamp was busy with his stall inside the main foyer selling old FDCs and mish-mash of stamps and MS. Today’s envelopes and MS were sold out early in the morning. The stamps were still available. This was in stark contrast to the low uptake in Kuala Lumpur.

The next stop was the historic centre of Melaka.

Did you know the Jalan Laksamana Post Office used to be the General Post Office?

The situation was the same here, all the products were sold out early. There were a few concordanist who came in early. Jalan Laksamana is the closest Post Office to the Melaka River Cruise station as well as the Maritime Museum.

First was the rest stop for the famous Melaka Chicken Rice Balls with of course chicken! Wash that down at the Clock Tower Cendol stall is an ideal way to cool down in the perpetual hot Melaka.

The Melaka River Cruise is located a short walk away from the cendol stall. I prefer to walk by the side of the Melaka River. The river is continually spruced up. It looks significantly cleaner.

The River Cruise office was already visited 3 times by concordanists. This is what they were looking for.

The condition of the cachet is really bad. It is basically disintegrated. Anyway, time to move to the Maritime Museum featuring a replica of Flor de la Mar. The museum was officiated on 13 June 1994 by Dr Mahathir Mohamed!

The last stop was in Merlimau. Merlimau has been a regular stops there few years due to a few concordant designs. This time it is the Demang Abdul Ghani Gallery located about 2 minutes from the Merlimau Post Office.

It is really worth visiting. The designs are so intricate that it is mind boggling! Looking just at the exterior will give you a hint of the magnificent design!

Concordancy is fun. Care to join the next tour?

Meanwhile, what are you waiting for? Visit Melaka 2019!

How does the ACTUAL items look like? https://myfdc.me/2018/10/31/m-i-c-k-e-y-m-o-u-s-e-mickey-is-90/

A lot of readers are confused on the postcards.

  1. The folder set contains 4 postcards that make up the image of a running Mickey. How ever you need to stick a stamp to send.
  2. The postcard set of 2 are pre-printed with valid postage stamps (of Mickey and Minnie) and are NOT included in the Mickey Folder.

Last item: The First Day Covers are PRR-PRINTED. No stamps and no chop. Just printing. This is the first time in Malaysia history of pre-printed FDC. Thus I am not able to get any cancellation / chop.

Hope the above helps.

Updated 14 November 2018:

This public service to myfdc readers is now closed as the item is available on eziemall again: https://myfdc.me/2018/11/13/mickey-mouse-is-back/

Meanwhile the Pre-Stamped Postcards are sold out at the counters. SODA can still fill in the SODA Order Form:

Updated 21 November 2018: M…I…C…K…E…Y ………. M…O…U…S…E ! Mickey is 90! SOLD OUT!

Pos Malaysia is issuing a special Mickey Mouse Folder Set in conjunction with the 90th Birthday of Mickey. This will be issued on 12 November 2018 on the first day of the Stamp Week 2018. There is also a Disney postcard set.

The Folder set retails at RM 90 with the following items in the set:

  1. A set of 4 postcards that make up Mickey.
  2. 2 designs of Setemku sheetlets.
  3. A set of 4 FDCs.

The Disney Postcard is a set of 2 postcards and retails at RM 10.

Updated 09 November 2018:

Here are additional information from today’s Media Preview.

  1. The number of folders printed are 5,000 sets.
  2. The number of Pre-Stamped Postal Cards (NOT in the Folder Set) are 2,000 sets (2 Postal Cards in a set).

The Malaysia Walt Disney Company team members led by their Country Director (Retail and Licensing), Gan Lay Koon (second from the left), were on hand at the Media Preview to explain the stamp issue. The designer is Xiu Wen, first on the left of the photo.

There will also be a Mickey Mouse exhibition in Pavilion (Kuala Lumpur) from 15 November 2018 to 01 January 2019. Do keep a look out for more information on the exhibition. Mickey Mouse will make 4 appearances on 17 November 2018 in Pavilion.

1. Folder Set

Here is the Folder with the 2 mint sheetlets of Mickey Mouse Setemku (personalised stamp). The Setemku features:

(a) Mickey in a Malaysian setting as part of Mickey Go Local.

(b) Mickey’s cartoons through the 90 years of history

The FDCs are pre-printed, i.e. it is a printed envelope with the stamp design and cancellation pre-printed. This is similar to a Pre-Stamped Envelope (PSE) however the difference is that the cancellation (chop) is also pre-printed. This is a first for Malaysian philately.

Here is the leaflet:

The folder set includes a set of 4 Postal Cards (Pos Malaysia explained that an official Postcard issued by Pos Malaysia is called a Postal Card). The 4 postal cards will form the picture of Mickey Mouse running! The back is the same design.

2. Pre-Stamped Postal Card (set of 2)

Here is the Postal Card with Pre-Printed stamp. The Postal Card can be posted internationally.

Thus a complete set of Folder and Pre-Stamped Postal Cards will add up to RM 100.00.

Pos Malaysia has confirmed that the product will also be on sale on their e-platform: http://www.eziemall.com

The Mickey Mouse sets will appeal to the Disney Thematic collectors.

Updated 12 November 2018:

The queue for Mickey Mouse products was high from the opening bell! A lot new faces were queueing even before 07:00 am. Since they are new, they were going around asking where and how to buy the products.

A Chinese language newspaper mistakenly wrote 500 sets were available thus creating an artificial panic buying. The http://www.eziemall.com was out of stock for the day as the new stocks have not been loaded, further increasing the demand.

There were 2 locations to purchase:

  1. The Kuala Lumpur General Post Office (it was sold out at about 10:00 am); and
  2. Philatelic Bureau HQ which had ample stocks even until late afternoon (however the queue was extremely long and labourious).

For SODA holders, there is also an additional order form:

Updated 14 November 2018:

The stocks on eziemall was again replenished by late evening on 13 November 2018. However, the Pre-Stamped Postcards are sold out at the counters. The only last resort is the SODA order forms (refer above). You can just print and fax over the form if you are a SODA member.

Oooops…….SODA is also sold out.

Updated 15 November 2018:

Surprisingly SODA still accept the order form even for the Pre-Stamped Postal Card set. I guess no harm in ordering.

A myfdc reader, Jacqueline, shared that Shah Alam General Post Office still have stocks of the Pre-Stamped Postal Card set!

Eziemall was temporarily out of stock. It was restocked by afternoon. I noticed quite a lot of dealers are marking eziemall to wait for “Sold Out”. I guess the dealers are eagerly waiting to sell their stocks.

The Philatelic Bureau Headquarters still have stocks and the sales was much slower than the previous 3 days.

Updated 21 November 2018:

Mickey Mouse folders are sold out.

This reflects the popularity of Mickey!
