Release of the Wild Orchids State Definitives 2017

Release of the Wild Orchids State Definitives 2017

Today’s final issue of the year saw the regulars at an early hour. The front liners were queuing to make FDCs (many to realise that there is only the KL cancellation – guess they are not reading myfdc – or they would have already download the forms).

Then there are those who want to try their luck to get Perlis – the most speculative state for stamps and philatelic. Recently an eBay item with 175th anniversary of UPU posted cover ended at astronomical price only to see it reappear by the same seller days later. Guess 2 hardcores were slugging it out and maybe a joy bidder helping the speculation.¬†As I mentioned earlier, the Philatelic Bureaus will only sell loose for the respective states and it is anyone’s guess where is “Perlis” in Perlis?

Anyway, with the same number printed and not much stocks in Kangar, we can only speculate on the speculation!

The crowd thinned out by noon. There were ample stocks. I guess a lesson learned for the next state series (hopefully someone will dig up myfdc to read) is to pre-pack 14 states rather than doing it on issue day.

The KL General Post Office did that and the transactions were faster.

There was also a Christmas Setem Ku on sale today. Not many realise it or are not interested.

Mint stocks were ample even until the closing bell.

So what was I up to? Buying up and tearing up my Federal Territory MS to make Definitive transition covers. I matched the face values of the existing Garden Flowers micro-text series released this year with the Orchids. This year the Garden Flowers state series was only printed for the Federal Territory. Just so happen that the stamps were released towards the end of 2018. This Federal Territory definitive then transitions into the Wild Orchids definitive. I do not expect to see the post office sheets of the new definitives anytime soon. So the Federal Territory Garden Flowers should bloom for a while.

Thus, this was the only chance to make the concordant Federal Territory “transition” cover as it is the first day of issue plus it is in Kuala Lumpur which is one of the 3 Federal Territories.

Here are some of my handiwork:

It took a month of preparation for the harder to find corner margins. As usual, spares are available.

I am now left with lots of 05 sen and 10 sen. ūüôā

Meanwhile, back to the question on where you can get Perlis?

The local post offices are your best bet. However, this time, there is not much demand for Perlis.

I will skip. I am a covers guy. Enjoy the queue.

Next Issue: 04 December 2018 State Definitive Wild Orchids

Next Issue: 04 December 2018 State Definitive Wild Orchids

Finally the last issue of the year is confirmed! It will be the State Definitives featuring Wild Orchids. The date of issue is 04 December 2018. The issue will comprise of only Miniature Sheets. There are no full sheets of 100s nor SODA smaller sheets of 20s this time.

Products:

  1. Perforated Miniature Sheets: RM 1.55 (14 states)
  2. Imperforated Miniature Sheets: RM 5.00 (14 states)
  3. Empty folder: RM 8.00
  4. Blank envelopes: 50 sen

This complements the National Definitive issued on 21 February 2017: https://myfdc.me/2017/02/26/orchid-hunting/

This does throw a conundrum into the Federal Territory Garden Flowers Definitive with Micro text printing…. how long will the Garden Flowers survive? When will the state Wild Orchids grow in the local post offices?

Will we even get 14 state cancellations in the Philatelic Bureaus or will it be SODA Order Form again?

You better bookmark this article as the above gets answered… sooner or later…

Meanwhile, let me do some digging for the new plants.

Oh yes, the Wild Orchids were grown by Reign Associates (Mr KY Lim).

Latest update:

Pos Malaysia has clarified that:

  1. SODA regular order and Philatelic Bureau HQ (04 December 2018) will only get Kuala Lumpur cancellation.
  2. http://www.eziemall.com and SODA Mail Order will receive 14 states cancellations.

This has also been collaborated by a reader (Pei Yong): refer to comments below. Many thanks for sharing.

Updated 27 November 2018:

Here are the SODA Order Forms for the 14 States Definitive with matching state cancellations.

Onwards to the Battle Sites

Onwards to the Battle Sites

Today’s stamp issue was the Battle Sites. The early birds were the regulars. The line thinned out by 9:30 am.

The designer, Mr. KY Lim arrived at 10:00 am for the autograph session. As many were still slowly sticking their stamps, the line at the autograph session was manageable even though some had quite a lot of items to be signed.

?

The next stop was to match the names of Kota Malawati and Bukit Kepong. Sadly the Mini Post Office in Bukit Kepong is no longer in operation. The 2 closest post offices are Labis and Pagoh and they are not exciting enough to warrant the 5 hour round trip. Next best would be…..

?

Then it was off to Kuala Selangor again. This time, I decided to visit the District of Kuala Selangor Museum of History. The museum is right on top of Malawati Hill near the Altingsburg Lighthouse.

The weather was fine and hot. The visibility was clear all the way across the straights of Malacca. Little wonder that this site was chosen as a fort.

20160915-district-of-kuala-selangor-museum-of-history

This is the front of the museum building. Photography is not allowed inside the museum. The museum is air-conditioned and a nice rest from the sweltering heat outside.

?

Many of the images on the stamp, envelope and folders can be found around the hill. Try and see if you can identify these two photos.

?

?

Next, it was a visit to the Kuala Selangor Post Office. In my haste during my last visit (Primates issue), I forgot to take a photo that would do justice to the charming building.

?

Here is an assignment…where is the best match for Kota Malawati?

Happy Mooncake Festival and Happy Malaysia Day everyone!
